Odds — normal

We calculated the margin for Powerbet by analysing the odds they offer. We further ranked them in one of the following three categories:

From 1% to 5%: Good value

Over 5% to 7%: Average value

Over 7% to 10%: Poor value

Football

We’re getting our results by taking into account the odds for final result outcomes measured in line with the total goals scored for different football leagues. By getting the average results using this method, we were able to obtain the margins for each league and also the overall betting margin for the bookmaker.

Powerbet has an overall average margin of 6.09% for football and falls in the average value category. In the first section using odds from the English Premier League, the margin is at 5.66%. The second section with Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A, has a margin of 5.87%. Finally, by counting the English Football League One, Austrian Bundesliga and Polish Ekstraklasa, the margin is at 6.75%.

Betting options — bad

Powerbet is working on infiltrating the Kenyan betting scene. Frankly speaking, we were left very unimpressed with their sportsbook and this is something they must address very soon.

Range of Sports: Let’s take other bookmakers into consideration for a bit. Some other bookies in Kenya with 10+ sports available for betting were tagged as ‘bad’ in our reviews.

Put the above into context with Powerbet who have only FIVE sports available to choose from on their sportsbook. They have only soccer, basketball, tennis, ice-hockey and volleyball on ground for punters to wager on.

Without being harsh, this leaves them lagging behind compared to their competitors and even way below what is expected as an acceptable standard.

In addition to that, we couldn’t find a casino section on the platform and that will leave the casino lovers uninterested and unwillingly to try out this bookie.

There are also very limited virtual games to play on this platform. For those who don't like to bet on live sport events, they may find this equally discouraging as well. The same goes for the virtual section which was also more or less inexistent.

Range of Bets and Markets: If that isn’t enough, the options available for each sport are more or less scarce as well. Even the popular football had just the basic options on ground and this is another massive letdown on their path.

However, we have one reason to commend them, or not. They have a jackpot feature called ‘soccer6’ but upon clicking the tab for this section, we found it to be empty and without any games at all. This is disappointing to say the least and they must fix up the soonest possible.

We don’t want to be overly critical about Powerbet but it is easy to see that they have a lot of work to do with their site. It is normal that punters look out for bookies that offer choices on the platter. Regarding the betting options, Powerbet is underperforming as they have very few options available for most of the sports categories.

Football is perhaps the only sport that saw little better attention from them as we saw about 100+ options for each game. Even at that, they can do way better compared to other betting sites available in Kenya.

For football, the platform holds some really interesting markets like "1st half market", "Home Multigoals", "Away Multigoals" and many more.

Even for top sports like basketball, we were surprised to see that it was lagging behind in terms of betting options. However, the basketball category holds some pretty interesting options like the "Winning margin", "Handicap" and a host of others.

In retrospect, the site apparently needs a re-design as the current user interface is below standard. Other sport categories should equally get as much attention as football. Even if they have few sports on offer as the moment, they can at least try to do well by stacking all available sports with enough options for punters to choose from.

Betting limits: The kind of money that can be placed on a bet should be enough for most people. Although, like is expected the limits are getting chopped when it comes to betting on lower leagues, but that’s the case on the whole industry.

Live — bad

We are in a new age where online sports betting has advanced from just pre-matches alone. Now, punters can take advantage of live betting and follow the matches as they go on.

This is practically like betting on pre-matches, only this time, the punter is betting on a game that they most likely have an idea on how it's going.

The fact that punters get to have a clue of how a match is going before betting, makes it one of the most popular features on online betting platforms.

Powerbets offers a very simplistic live betting section. The one big disadvantage about this is that the provision of sports in the live section is very limited.

As at the time of this review, there were just 3 main sports: football, basketball and tennis. This is highly below standard considering the sport offerings of other bookies in their live section.

What they lack in extensive sports selection, they make up for by stacking the ones available with a relatively impressive amount of betting markets. Football and basketball have about 30+ options available for live betting. It would suffice to note that there is still room for improvement in this regard.

Also, the user interface for this section was quite poor and can be improved as well.

About the bookmaker

Powerbet is a betting platform operating in Kenya. They are owned by Oysterbay Lotto Limited that has established the brand name in other African countries like Ghana. They only came into the Kenyan betting scene in 2018 and it’s no surprise to see that they still have a lot to work on. Provided they improve on their sportsbook and the overall look of their website, they can pick up the pace and be one of the top bookies in Kenya pretty soon. They are licensed to operate in Kenya by the Betting Control and Licensing board with license number 0000110.
